Why It Happens
Thrill Seeking Behavior
Sensation seeking is one of the biggest causes of drunk driving
About 51% of students who reported alcohol impaired driving were high sensation seekers
For certain students, taking risks feels exciting and alcohol can make that feeling even stronger. When people are buzzed or drunk they may feel overly confident or think they are invincible which leads them to make dangerous decisions just for the adrenaline rush. Some students enjoy pushing limits or showing off in front of their friends and driving fast or driving while impaired becomes a way to feel rebellious or daring. This mindset makes them forget how serious the consequences can be turning risky behavior into something they see as fun instead of extremely dangerous.
Peer Pressure
Another one of the biggest reasons drunk driving happens on college campuses is peer pressure. Many students feel like they have to go along with what their friends are doing so they don't seem boring. At parties or social events people may encourage each other to keep drinking or act like driving after a few drinks isn't a big deal. Some students also are afraid to speak up because they are scared their friends will judge them. Peer pressure creates an environment where students ignore the dangers just to fit in leading to more people driving or riding with someone who shouldn't be driving.
Environment and Transportation
Students can also end up driving and drinking is because they feel they have no other way to get home. Many college towns don't have reliable late night buses and ride options like Uber or Lyft can be too expensive or unavailable during busy times. Some students live off campus or far from the party so walking isn't safe or realistic. When people feel stuck or stranded they can decide to drive themselves even if they know they shouldn't. Not having enough transportation options makes it much more likely that students will take the risk of driving after drinking.
